WordPress Theme: Ocadia

I’ve nearly completed my first free theme for WordPress – meet Ocadia.

Now I need a favour. Imagine I’m batting my eyelashes and looking somewhat like a cute puppy dog. Wander around the site a bit. Does anything break or look off? Is the loading time offensive in any way? If anything does appear on the strange side, please let me know where it happened and any details that you don’t mind divulging (e.g. operating system, browser version..etc).

Thanking you very much.

Oh yes, and the theme is indeed named after one of my pet turtles. Waffle belongs to the genus Ocadia (Chinese Golden Threads = Ocadia sinensis) and I wanted to make something pretty like him.

[Edit] It’s release time, grab it here. [/Edit]

I’m using firefox 1.0, there appears to be a problem with the with of the content area, the background image with the fading roundness is covering more than half of the sidebar.

Thanks Cadwyn, although the effect was intentional. It was originally meant to be a sort of ghost-like theme, but then I realised that no one would want to download a theme called Ghost.

everything looks good at my end. i was wondering about what cadwyn mentioned but now that i know it was done for a reason i like it very different.

I thought the same thing as Cadwyn and Laurie. Everything else is good. Loaded quickly, looks nice. It’s a simple skin, yet still classy in your trademark Becca fashion.

GAH!!! I love everything in your site and on that new theme. The way it was designed, the colors used, and even the comment box is well organized.. Anyway, keep it up, girl..

It’s nice, simple and clean, elegant. …. Though I still wonder about the effect you made from the transparency just doesnt fit right to me….

I will forever (for right now anyway lol) stay true to IE6+. So of course everything looks fabulous on this end. I like the effect up there, and it looked intentional to me…..

  • Becca said,

Thanks for the comments all. I guess the sidebar transparency is a love it/hate it sort of thing! I think I’ll keep it, but make the next theme with a normal one. Craig: I definitely intend to, once I’ve done a bit more testing with it and given it its own little page here.

It’s pretty nice, but I was hoping for something like your ‘dignity’ theme. It’s reaal nice! I do feel like the transparency half-way through the menu is sort of distracting.

3 comments on the same post, anyone would think I’m a stalker. Just thought I’d say that I’ve got the theme up and running on my blog now and it’s aaaaaaaamazing. The only thing I thought was that it could do with a matching bullet for lists in posts… so I made one.

Um, a problem spoted… I’m using Mac OS 10.3.8, and browsing with Safari 1.2.4.When I click the comment link to view comments, the whole sidebar drops below the “Submit Comment” button… I assum this is not intentional…and probably due to the same reason causing the problem above, the whole white layer is missing…(so it’s only the green background.)Hope the problem can be fixed, because this is such a beautiful theme, and I’m eagerly waiting for it’s release!

Very nice theme, although the square with the inner glow looks a bit out of place. But otherwise, I like it.

  • Becca said,
    March 15, 2005 9 years, 206 days ago

Luka: Thanks for letting me know. I’m guessing it’s due to Safari having different fonts or a different font size and so the comment textarea becomes too wide. I’ll amend the theme in the morning.

the theme looks good it has a small problem in firefox but you can fix in some seconds I think

  • Luka said,
    March 15, 2005 9 years, 206 days ago

I find the reason for the problem:in comments.php, line 78 (Leave a Comment)the end tag should be /h2, but is /h3.after I edited this, everything is fine, so I promptly changed my theme to this!

Ocadia is definitely a very great theme. It looks neat and is well designed. However the grey footer looks a bit unsuitable in my opinion.I don’t know if you mind, but after I installed it, I made some small changes to the stylesheet on my weblog, which remove the grey background and make the theme look the same in Firefox, Internet Explorer and Opera.

  • Becca said,
    March 20, 2005 9 years, 206 days ago

Unweak: You’re free to edit the theme however you wish. I’m not sure what you changed though as it would’ve looked fine in those three browsers out of the box.

  • unweak said,
    March 20, 2005 9 years, 206 days ago

Have a look at some screenshots (http://unweak.xardas.lima-city.de/_ocadia/). It’s not a huge difference between the Internet Explorer rendering and the rendering of other browsers, but you notice it (footer.gif is not shown in IE). It’s only a minor bug (and the only one I noticed ), but you may want to know about it.

  • Becca said,
    March 20, 2005 9 years, 206 days ago

Aah, yes, I know about that one – it’s an IE bug. I figured I wouldn’t bother with it though as it doesn’t affect readability or break anything, and I guess if you only saw that in IE you’d assume it was made like that. Although if anyone has more info on the bug I’d very much appreciate it, as the same thing affects the Blossoms theme (and much more noticeably). My footer divs have the attribute clear:both. IE clears anything I put in the footer div, but doesn’t clear the div’s background. (If you got rid of the other backgrounds in the above example you’d find the footer background all the way up where the content div ends.)For Ocadia, I suppose I could put another box in the box, but I’d hate to add a meaningless div for the sake of a bug that doesn’t really bug anyone.

I have given you ALL the credit… I just changed the images. Please let me know if you have a problem with that and I’ll put it back to normal. My main question is this… how do I add more to the side bar? I sort of wanted a Previous Posts and a Categories thing on the side. I tried adding it in, but I then lose the ENTIRE sidebar. oopsie. I’m really new to this php stuff. If you have a chance please let me know (I realize you are a busy, busy lady! especially with the new Moxie job!)You are super talented, my dear!

Hi,I’ve just edited the theme Ocadia of yours to fit in my Blogger blog (http://pro447.blogspot.com). First of all, thank you for the great theme. Second of all, you’re a great female coder/web designer. And third of all, I have some problems with the theme. Let’s see this page for example http://pro447.blogspot.com/2005/04/ni-loannn.html#comments (well, I’m sorry that my blog is in Vietnamese), and the problems are:- The Toggle comments works with some error. Just try it and you’ll see. I tried my best but I can’t fix it.- When I view my blog with Firefox 1.0.1, both of the vertical and horizontal scroll bar appear. Please help me fix this. Thanks in advance. And once more, I’m glad to send you the edited Ocadia Blogger theme with full help, of course if you want it Have a nice day!

I like the theme very much & am using a modified version of it with different images on my site at the moment. I notice that you have recently updated it to version 1.1Is there any list of what has actually changed between the two versions? I have looked at some of the files with a file compare program, but was interested to know if it fixed any specific errors or anything like that.

[…] Okay, so the actual upgrade didn’t actually take me very long. I’ve been spending most of this time surfing the web and applying a publicly available theme to my blog. I’m a big fan of your cleanly designed theme. I just have one bug to report: on my browser, the search text box is too wide, and flows outside the sidebar. It’s probably because of my weird font settings: I use Firefox with a large minimum font size. Your search text box is set to use size=20 (characters), and I find things work better if I instead force it to use a line like#sidebar input#s { width: 170px; }to explicitly limit the pixel width instead of the character width of the search box
