WordPress theme in progress: Sweet Dreams

I’ve been doing a bit of work on getting this design ready for public release, but there’s still a long way to go. The major issue slowing things down is the large and soon-to-be-obvious fact that I don’t have a clear idea of what I want the final product to be.

So far I’ve set it up with three widths (920px, 760px and fluid) and five different colour schemes.

You can see all the other options at the also-a-work-in-progress theme page. If you’d like, you can download what’s been done so far, but keep in mind that there will most likely be some major changes before I ‘officially’ release it. So really, only do that if you want to help bug hunt, give suggestions on how to improve it, etc…

Help!

Some points I’m pondering that I’d really appreciate your feedback on (open questions for all, you don’t have to have used it or even WordPress itself):

Should I use javascript to make the sidebar sections alternate?

Basically I don’t see how I can get things alternating with widgets the way it is, not to mention blogrolls, categories…etc. There could be an option to turn it off.

Should I kill some of the colour schemes?

Five’s a bit excessive, isn’t it? I intend to do some more work on all the schemes except blue/green, but you get the general idea about how they look. Which should stay and which get booted?

One thing I don’t want to do is split the different widths and colours into additional themes. I foresee maintaining them all would be a massive headache, and basically if I can keep things easy to update I’m more likely to put aside time to do so. I wouldn’t mind creating ‘add-on packs’ with the colour schemes that get kicked out though, there are already several I’ve already rejected through no fault of their own, and it seems silly not to share them just because they weren’t to my taste.

Also to do

  • First and foremost, a better header image
  • Option to add your own header image
  • Widget support

Final note

Above all and in reference to the alternating sidebar sections, I don’t want this to become something that you need to fuss with or know HTML/CSS to use. That would entirely defeat the purpose of why I do this in the first place.

Becca, you are simply awesome.. And user-friendly too (1) I don’t know what javascript ACTUALLY is, so I can’t comment on that. But I love the fact that you’re including widgets (like I said, you’re sooo user-friendly) (2) If you’re going to drop some colour schemes, may I suggest you retain the reddish one (is it almost the same colour scheme as your “Remember”?)? Because I think the reddish one’s the best-looking, probably because I personally don’t quite fancy dark-coloured stuff, hehhee And “Sweet Dreams” is just so sweet

Fantastic theme, it’s been a while you haven’t made themes, I love that one very much.1. I personally don’t like Javascript. I’d like to edit the template myself. And may be the theme is user-friendly enough as widgets are supported.2. My God, I really love all the five color schemes you mentioned above. It’s really amazing to have different color schemes as it whets everyone’s appetite. Perhaps you can let us vote for the schemes if you really don’t want so much? Thanks for your great effort again, I’m eager to see the final official release. I’ll let you know if there are any bugs.

this is hard cause I like all the color schemes! waaaaah! hmm is there a way where you can just have different styles for each so you can still retain all the color schemes?hmmm I’m not sure what you mean by alternating widgets but it sounds ok but I’d stick to just regular widgets. I suggest going for the fluid one or the 920px…

  • April 26, 2007 7 years, 179 days ago

hmm yes i know, i dont comment much, but been reading here for a while Anyway, well i guess if you like all color themes, why not keep em all ?alternative, you could write a function and turn it into a plugin, where users could change color (css) inc the header image, dont think it would be that hard to do, but thats like the ultemate user-frinedly option another thing tho If i was you, witch im not (thank god, like beeing a boy ) i would make a night /day theme out of sweet dreams, so at day there would be a blue sky with a sun and at night it could turn to what it is now, would give some variation, and stand a bit out from the ordinary standards from a more advanced point of view you could via a xml rss feed from a weather service, also add like skyes and stuff when theres rain comming better stop now before it turns into spam Cheers Torben

First of all, I think you should keep all colour schemes, because there are alot of different people with different “taste” for colours. So my suggestion.. Don’t kill any of the colour themes!Someone said there should be no javascript, I agree, as I (and probably others) would probably want to edit the template at some point, and wouldn’t have any idea what to do with the javascript.I really like the colors used at sweet-dreams-greyteal and sweet-dreams-bluegreen.Keep up the great work!

IMHO the best ones are the first, the third and the last one (it means the shots in the left column…).About point 1:I think you shouldn’t use js (but it’s just for my personal hostility against that language).About point 2:See above. For the header image you could use a good shot from a professional photographer. I’m sure you could find somebody allowing you to use a picture for the theme on flickr or deviantart. Often a good image can catch the attention more then a good color scheme.

    1. I’m a loser when it come to javascript, so I’ve nothing to say about it.2. Don’t kill them if you like them.I’ll test the design when I can, that is, after I feel bored with mine. Sorry that it will not be a help at all I’ll test it on my home computer and see what happens though

COOL!! can’t wait! I was wondering… how do you submit in a theme? and what program did you use for it? I have this theme in mind… but I don’t know HOW to start and stuff

  • Lara said,

Hiya Becca!Absolutely lovely work, as always. Anyways, onto your questions!I think the Javascript option is a nice idea… if you have the time of course! I wouldn’t kill yourself over it. I think solid colors there would not detract from the overall theme at all. Also, I really enjoy the colors but I would stick with one. I really enjoy the blues/greens. It makes a great background for the starry “accessories.” One final note, I feel like this design would reach its full potential at a set width, like the one here you have on Beccary. Although I understand the usability side of it, I think the sort of designs you create are a pieces of artwork and should have this sort of set parameter. I like to think that I’m pretty good at pulling the graphical end of designs in together, but WOW. The way in which you harness all sorts of CSS properties is simply amazing. There’s barely a graphic there, but you wouldn’t even know! It’s just all pulled together so nicely. I also admire you for the time you put in to these free designs including all their user-friendlyness and widgeting support! haha. Simply amazing. You’re like the “rich benefactor” of WordPress themes. The sort of person that just spreads the wealth. And that wealth is your talent! Keep it going!

I have used the Almost-Spring and the function is perfect. The sweat dream is even great. How nice it is !! Thanks a lot.

Hey Becca,This is theme is very easy to use, of course I’ve tweaked it immensely and still have more to add. I love the colors you’ve chosen for the releases, very pleasing to the eyes. I’m tweaking the alternating sidebar codes, seems I’m running to a small issue when the links section is added. (Note: I am using IE 7).

  • Sadish said,

Thanks Becca for your contributions to wordpress.I tried this theme out and its really looking good. I would like to suggest a few things and it is purely upto you to use it / toss it 1. for the wp_list_pages() in the header.php, add “sort_column=menu_order”.Many users add page ordering numbers to their pages within the wordpress admin and think that it should order it the way they want it. but it will work only if the theme has this line of code, isnt it ?Also if the user does not have a page ordering, then it automatically uses the name as the sorting column, which is what you get by default.2.I would like to have comments on pages too. Adding a call to comments_template in page.php is a welcoming addition.3. 404.php says the file that i am looking for is not available. the missing one could be a “post” that i am looking for too.4. an archive.php will also be a nice addition. when viewing a monthly archive or category view, it will be useful to put a heading at the top saying this is an archive view.5. I believe most people would prefer a curved tab instead of a squared tab. you could even remove this option an always provide a curved tab.Thats about it.Thanks AgainSadishBecca replied,Thanks for the feedback. I completely agree with your suggestions about wp_list_pages, archive headers and my generic 404 message – I’ll add those changes to the next version.Regarding the tabs, the square versions are there in preparation for an ‘add your own header image’ option. I’d made some transparent gifs with rounded corners as well, but the pixelated corners just didn’t seem to suit at all. There are always transparent png’s, but they come with their own issues. I’ll have to play with this a bit more before deciding what gets included and what doesn’t.

Hey Becca it’s me again…after tweaking my site some more, I honestly think the Javascript would help in altering the colors in the sidebars instead of manual coding with the class=”alt” tag. you can check my sidebars for the mesh between the link/categories section on the main page where it seems to alternate fine however when additional pages are added those two (and other additonal pages) they alternating does not seem to happen.I think this would be cleaner and more concise throughout the site. Also I was working on some color themes myself and I’d love to throw some ideas your way if you don’t mind. Hopefully this helps!Becca waved hello and replied,Hey Char, welcome back! Yeah, I’m thinking of definitely going with the javascript (with an option to turn it off) – it’d be so much easier when it comes to sidebar sections that may or may not be there, such as the page lists, multiple blogrolls…etc, and sections that only appear on certain pages. And of course I’d love to hear your ideas about the colours.

The first (original) and third (brown-based) color schemes are the best; seeing as you haven’t produced free-to-use themes in these particular colors yet. Is there any other sort of picture thing you could add similar to the trees on your webpage? Or perhaps some sort of function you could add that would let us add our own customized jpg/png etc?I love your themes

  • Ali said,
    April 29, 2007 7 years, 179 days ago

I love jadeite’s idea. Is it possible to add a function like that? I adore WordPress, but am somewhat inept were designing for it is concerned! Also, will this theme be compatible with WP Mu? I know they say most are, but my current theme is a pain in the @#$! to get working, so I am very curious. As well, (just one more thing, I promise!) what plugin are you using for your archive? Extended Live Archives is supposed to work with my current theme and works on everyone else’s site, just not mine and I’ve experienced the same problems with all the other archive plugins I’ve tried, so I’m always looking for more. Thanks!

I’m glad to see you’re working on the theme! Personally, this is what I would do in your situation. The color combination I would scratch is the first one- the one that matches your current layout on this site. Aside from the green, the first version actually looks a lot like the second- and by not going ahead with the first, your site’s layout would be a little more ‘custom’, if you know what I mean. (Going from left to right,) I personally like the second, fourth, and fifth color combinations. The second is my favorite though, because the colors seem to work better with the starry header. Hope that’s a little helpful! Good luck working on the rest of the theme.

Hi there Becca,I just downloaded the theme and wanted to drop you some lines commenting on it. First of all: Great job!!! The theme is very beautiful, but offers a wide range of customization possibilities, which I think are very important for themes to be offered.1. I do not know exactly what making a sidebar alternate means…so I won´t comment on that.2. I like all the colorschemes, but if you are about to kick one, I would suggest the black and grey scheme, please keep the others, they are beautiful.I installed the theme on my localhost WordPress, and it is having problems with the languageattributes function and the wp_list_categories function, but maybe this is a problem of my WP version. Can you tell me how you wrote that theme customization page for the admin panel? This would be very nice Keep up the good work;-)Becca replied,Thanks for the feedback, I’ll look into those issues. The theme customisation page uses WordPress Theme Toolkit by PlanetOzh.

I tried to download, but the link is giving me a 404…I think the color schemes are great – in fact, if I were suggesting anything more, I’d say a green-based one or even an orange one in addition to what you have would be great. Of course, you don’t want to overload yourself, but I don’t think you should drop any myself

Hi Becca,Glad to see you will be making another theme — they’re beautiful.I produce WP-United, a plugin that integrates WordPress with phpBB. Your themes are very popular. However, there is a small problem. Under WP-United, WordPress isn’t always in the global scope. In these circumstances, your functions.php file fails.Right now, I’m trying to work round the problems in my code (as I should – it is me altering the behaviour of WordPress from the norm), but it might be a good idea to make a small modification to your functions.php files. Basically, you shouldn’t assume that your functions.php will be invoked in the global scope. So, for example, for almost spring, change:if (!$almostspring->is_installed()) {toif (!$GLOBALS['almostspring']->is_installed()) {,or do “global $almostspring; ” at the top of the file.I hope you don’t mind the suggestion . Shoot me an e-mail or look up my site if you want further details.BTW, I’m also an expat living in China — been here for 8 years. Regularly visit HK and love the place…Cheers,John

Not about this design in general but more a wish that a great designer (like you) would consider working on a theme that is less bloggy and more newspaper oriented. As we all basically have gotten used to read information in a magazine layout I feel that if somebody made a simple yet capable design that looked like a magazine that theme would be the number one in all toplists over used and downloaded designs for wordpress and all the other cms’s out there.. Since I can’t do it myself I just have to guess that it’s not so easy to do but anyway, there’s my wish..

Great theme i love it! I love all the colors. My favorites are the blackish, reddish and blueish colors. I’m currently using the blackish version on my beta website that im making. There have been a few tweaks ive had to make with the theme for my plugins but other than that the theme has been PERFECT. Thank you for taking the time to make such great themes. You do great work!MaryJane

I love your extra smilies set. But apparently the pluing Matt Read’s more plugin conflicts with anything AJAX related according to most help posts i read. Since i have about three things which use AJAX i cant use this plugin. Is the plugin required in order to use your smiles or is there a alternative?Maryjane
