Now that he’s grown up a bit, Waffle’s become a bit more weary and a bit less witless. He’s still insanely warm-hearted for a reptile though and is perfectly content in the company of humans as long as they don’t wield cameras.
Well I do occasionally wield a camera, and it’s nearly impossible to get a decent shot of him when he’s on the alert. The solution? Distract with food (remember, he’s still a little witless). The result? Pictures with my baby’s cuute little face actually showing.
Oh, and even though I say he’s a he, I’m pretty sure by now that he’s a she. But I was so sure for so long that he was a he that I can’t stop calling him that.
The next photo’s from a while ago, but just in case you haven’t seen it here’s one of my favourite pictures of Dorothy:
It was taken a moment before she noticed I was there then shot me a look like I was being loud or something. Seriously, she looks at people like we’re the small ones. Aah well, Dorothy will be Dorothy, and she’ll still always be my little girl!
how cute! I want a turtle now Waffle actually looks like it’s smiling lol
Well.. There are two ways (that I know of) in which you can determine for sure whether a turtle is a he or a she or a gay (yes, this exists, and it’s called “intersex”):(a) a minor surgical procedure called laparascopy, or(b) wait for it to grow up Becca replied,I think I’ll just go for the waiting option. It’s now that Waffle’s getting bigger and his tail’s not thickening up at all that makes me think he’s a she. I don’t know of any resources though that tell you how to properly sex an Ocadia sinensis, nor do I know anyone else in real life who owns one. The only reference I have is some photos of male Ocadias on a forum that were of a similar size to Waffy – and judging from their vent locations and tail size Waff isn’t one of them! But we’ll know for sure in a couple of years. At least RES’s are easy to tell apart. Dorothy’s all lady.
Ah! Waffle is so cute, and I love the colours you got!The light in my tank JUST broke earlier today. Haiya, time to go shopping!…and I’m beginning to think more and more that Stalin is a female.
The photos are amazing Becca!
He he he! That is one pretty reptile! Probably the prettiest I’ve seen so far. And that’s a brilliant camera, the pictures are really clear & crisp [Okay, I’m starting to sound a little nerdy now, aren’t I? Ahem…]Veering slightly off topic here, but I just wanted to comment on this tree layout, while I’m here. I’ve admired all the different designs for this site but this has to be my favourite.Gem x
Everytime I see your photos, I’m reminded of how cute turtles are I love that last picture of Waffle facing the camera – what a cheeky one!

Hey, Becca! It’s been a while since I last visited your site, but it still looks beautiful as always, I love the new colours of the current layout – fab-u-lous!I also love these photographs of your turtles – they’re amazing shots, wonderful spectrum of colours, and they really capture the characters of Waffle and Dorothy. Dorothy sounds like a charming little madam!
What Makes a Successful Designer?…What do you feel you need to accomplish to be a success? Perhaps it’s all about the money, or enjoying yourself? Maybe you want to win awards, or go freelance? Maybe you’ll only feel successful once you own your own company?I got tagged with this…
Wow, what a badass looking turtle!
You have an interesting site. I have two box turtles. First one, Speedy is male. The second one, we got today is named Indy. I’m certain that Indy is male by the color of eyes but Speedy jumped on Indy and started having sex!!! They have been at it for an hour now. Is it really possible they could be gay? or that speedy hasn’t been laid in at least 4 years?
I liked your blog design very much:-)
