Plugging

A couple plugs to start. First of all, please drop by Rubenque MB! It’s a new board created by the most lovely Lauren that’s in search of new members. I’m a simple newbie (although my status is kind enough to call me a Junior Member instead) but am quite enjoying my time there and would like to see it grow. And of course, if you do join please say that Becca referred you.

Secondly, Siobhan has opened up a fanlisting for the stunning Salome of InHerOwnWrite.net. So if you are an admirer, please take a peek.

So out of curiousity, what kind of music makes you move? Not who’re your favourite artists, but sort of beats tend to just take over your whole body? Willie and I were talking about this and he named Give It Away by the Red Hot Chili Peppers as one of his. Not wanting to shoot down anyone’s taste in music, I let my brain run through all of its sarcastic comments and then smiled and nodded. For me though, I’d have to say Parallel Universe also by Red Hot, Cochise by Audioslave, Trip Like I Do by Filter, and most things by Prodigy and Jamiroquai.

Got a call from JR the other day. He was apologising for ignoring me (I thought I was the one who started that) and telling me that he’s proud of me, that he still cares, to say hello to my mom…etc. Sounds sweet, but it really isn’t. It was so tempting to scream, “Just leave me alone all ready!” but I kept calm. *sighs*

Oh, and does anyone know of any other bloggers who keep reptiles as pets? I’m becoming completely turtle obsessed and it’d be nice to find others who are too.

Unprovoked update: Added a few new backgrounds and reorganised the site a little (notice the newly created External section which will soon house my link collection). Just to let people know, coming soon will be some icons to match the smilies as I always think of graphics I’d like to insert into blog entries (e.g. the sun, rain clouds, speech bubbles) and perhaps a SOTM competition.

Sunday Brunch

Time again for the Sunday Brunch.

1. Who is the last person to make you laugh?
Well mom and I have had a few giggles today as always, but I guess I haven’t really sent spit flying since last night chatting with Willie.

2. Who is the last person to make you angry or upset?
Hmm… I guess that’d have to be Clarke a few days ago. I was chatting with him on the phone and trying to talk about emotional issues, but the dumbass just didn’t get any of it. When someone’s obviously upset and wants to let it out, you’re meant to just listen and be understanding, not try and twist their words around!

3. When is the last time you took a leisurely ride or walk?
I guess it’s been a while now… Lol, Willie and I started on a walk last night but ended up jumping in a cab instead!

4. When is the last time you took a vacation?
Three years ago or so. My dad keeps trying to force me to go places (most recently would be, Manila, Melbourne, the Grand Canyon and New Zealand) just to use up the flight money I get (he’s a doctor, so as his child I get all these benefits) but I’d rather just stay here. He always manages to ask when I’m either busy studying or when my friends from other countries are over in Hong Kong. I’d be jumping at the chance to go to any of those places if it was with my friends, but going with my dad just isn’t appealing.

5. What is the last thing you do before turning in for the night?
Call Willie to chat for a while and to say sweet dreams.

Kitty Cat

Now isn’t this little guy just the sweetest?

Firefox

Vicki and I were out in TST yesterday walking along a crowded street when we saw this little fellow stumbling out of a market and towards the road. Everyone seemed to be either ignoring him or just staring at him blankly, and so when I spotted a lady in the market pointing at him I assumed he belonged to her and picked him up to return him. When I made a gesture like I was about to give him to her, she shook her head showing that he wasn’t hers. Realising he was a lost stray, Vicki and I walked to the nearest clear space (hard to find in HK) to think about what we should do with him.

I felt very silly when Vicki let me in on the fact that the lady pointing at him wasn’t actually his owner, but someone who wanted to have him exterminated (he was in a market remember)! Heh, I wasn’t looking at the expression on her face but just the hand that was pointing at him. The poor little fellow was obviously distressed, shivering and meowing. To make a long story short, we took a cab to Vicki’s place and got Firefox (we were trying to think of a name, and being a complete geek I suggested Firefox after Mozilla’s browser, which Vicki agreed with since he looked a bit like a fox) nice and warmed up.

It didn’t take long for him to adopt us. (Unlike other pets, you never adopt a cat. They adopt you.) He was soon warm and content, probably for the first time in his life. As neither of us could keep him and he obviously needed a check up (his right eye was infected) Vicki went on the net to find out where the nearest SPCA center was. We had a suspicion that they might put him down, he was very young, weak, and looked like he’d been kicked around a bit, but felt that it would be a better way to go than being squished or runover, and at least he was able to spend at least a couple of hours of his life cozy and safe.

I didn’t have time to make it all the way to the center (I had to get home as my mom had changed the locks and she was waiting for me to get back so she could let me in then go to sleep) so Vicki and I parted in Admiralty. She did text me later though to let me know that the lady at the center had managed to get him to eat and that they weren’t going to put him down. (They decided if he was too young or weak to eat by himself they’d have to, but when Firefox was presented with some cat food he lept into the bowl and devoured it.) So it all ends well, he’ll be going to a foster home for now until he’s well enough to be put up for adoption.

I also treated myself to a new skirt, take a looksie.

My new skirt

Isn’t the pattern absolutely crazy? I got it for 50% off as well. I was actually looking for the dress that came in the same material, but they must’ve all ready sold out. Oh well, I’m still very satisfied with it. I think my mom might go looking for another one to send over to my sister in Melbourne, it’s exactly the sort of skirt she’d adore as well and this way no one gets their clothes stolen from them when we see each other again!

Troy

A bit late, but here’s the Sunday Brunch. This week’s topic is Fun in the Sun.

1. Do you prefer the beach or a pool?
If it’s sparkling clean (a rare find in Hong Kong), the beach, otherwise the pool.

2. What kind of tan are you most likely to get during the summer: a beautiful, bronze, laying out in the sun for hours tan; a gradual, few minutes a day tan; a “farmer tan” from working outdoors; or do you just get as red as a lobster and peel the next day?
The gradual, few days a minute tan. It’s not very gradual though, I tan pretty easily so after a few minutes it’s all ready noticable the next day. I think I’ve only ever burnt once in my life in Palau because the sun was so harsh. Not even hours of basking in Melbourne’s sunshine makes me red, so I guess I’m lucky.

3. Which summertime water activity are you more likely to enjoy the most… boating, jet skiing, waterskiing, swimming or floating down a lazy river on a tube?
I could go for boating.

4. What is your favorite picnic food?
Just a good sandwich. Yummy and not at all messy. Potato salad is also good, but mayo tends to give me a tummy ache.

5. Do you know how to cook on a barbeque grill?
Yep, and I’m surprisingly good at it (surprising because I’m vegetarian, so I cook for everyone else then go eat an apple or something).

Watched a late showing of Troy last night (it was only released in HK last week). I really enjoyed it, but I always have to dissect movies, so bad points first then good points.

Firstly, whoever played Helen was terrible! I’m rarely so harsh in my criticisms of actors/actresses, but she really did seem to ruin a lot of the scenes. (As far as the best acting goes, definitely Eric Bana as Hector and Peter O’Toole as Priam!) She’s an important character during the beginning, but I didn’t feel that she managed to draw the audience into the movie at all. You’d think Helen of Troy would project beauty, instead you get ’somewhat pretty’. Also, not all, but a good portion of the movie felt emotionally void. I can’t put my finger on what it was, but there was definitely something missing. I could tell a lot of the audience felt the same way, instead of feeling for the characters we were often left biting our lips trying not to laugh.

Now for the good points… Loved the action. Nothing compared to say, the Two Towers, but still good entertainment. Hah, afterwards Willie kept copying Brad Pitt’s little jumpy move, great inspiration for us small people! On the subject of Brad Pitt, I didn’t think his performance was nearly as bad as I was lead to believe it would be. I thought the scene with Priam and Achilles in the tent was fabulous and that it made the movie. Oh yes, and I very much enjoyed Odysseus’ (Sean Bean’s) craftiness. Kinda makes me want to see what the Odyssey would be like as a movie.

And now some random points. Lol, Willie was pretty happy to see Orlando Bloom have to play the coward. I say was, because I quickly deflated him by letting him in on the fact that when Paris was cowaring at Hector’s feet all the girls in the cinema were actually awwing and wanting to take care of him! We both agreed that Brad Pitt in that leathery thing was not good though (anyone else hear the outfit squeak when he sat down?) and that his legs are too skinny for it! And true, many parts weren’t true to the Iliad, but then again I wouldn’t want to watch a ten year long movie anyway.

Waffle, our new turt, is settling in well. He’s all ready starting to come out of his shell (hahaha ) and not get all shy when we approach. I think he’s happy, he’s got deep water and a nice warm light (neither of which he had before) and is taking full advantage of them both.

Had to visit my father’s earlier today. More on that soon.

[Edit] Hey anyone want a free custom layout? Seriously. I’m suffering from designer’s block and designing for others always seems to help kick start the creativity since. I guess I just get bored of designing for myself all the time. So yes, if you’re interested just leave a comment with a few keywords on what you’d like the layout to look like (e.g. clean, summery, retro, sunsets, Orlando Bloom…etc) and I’ll choose someone. [/Edit]

Stupid IE

To everyone using Internet Explorer, I recommend that you switch to using the default theme, Fields of Space if you aren’t already. For some reason IE has decided to screw around with the CSS so tonight I’ll either recode things or just retire all the other themes and start again.

Kudos to Mozilla and Firefox users!

[Edit] Made my mind up, when I get home tonight I’ll be retiring Fusion Gamma, Hive Mind and Peach Cooler (although I may make another Peach Cooler like version sometime in the future). The others will be completely recoded to accommodate IE’s buggy ass. [/Edit]

Waffle

Mom and I went out to Prince Edward during the afternoon, look who we brought home! We named him (or her) Waffle.

Waffle

During our walk I was horrified to so many common snapping turtle hatchlings being sold. I expected to see tanks filled with red eared sliders being sold for cheap, but not snapping turtles! I seriously doubt anyone who buys one of them has any idea what they’ll grow up to be like.

Seeing the way a lot of stores in Hong Kong keep animals and reptiles started to get me a bit down, but I was glad to find at least one store though that actually took care of their creatures. The shop attendants were pretty nice as well, I think they were practising their English with us.

My dad called me earlier, I’m going over to his place on Tuesday. Found out that my stepmom is pregnant again. It’ll be their fifth child together and my dad’s eighth (my stepmom’s Catholic and so doesn’t use any form of birth control). My dad also told me about how he’s gone through with buying the farm in New Zealand and that he’s planning to raise cows and sheep. *sighs* He’s also planning an orchard and a Chinese garden. Only those who have met my family (you there Vicki?) will know how bitterly hilarious this all is!

[Edit] Just got the first assignment for one of my courses back, another 100%. Yay! [/Edit]

Unprovoked update: Retired three themes and recoded the rest (see the last post).

Furry Friday

Commentors can check out the previous entry, I just had to post again to do this week’s Furry Friday.

1. Have you ever owned an “exotic” animal? If so, what was it?
Can’t say I have. The closest I’ve come would have to be turtles, lovebirds and gouldian finches.

2. Reptiles, your thoughts… “I love them!” or “EWWWW SLIMY!!”?
Love ‘em, love ‘em, love ‘em! And they’re not slimy at all, a lot of reptiles’ scales actually feel amazingly smooth.

3. If you were an exotic reptile what kind would you be (describe yourself as much as you’d like) and why?
I was thinking maybe a frilled neck lizard, but then again I’m vegetarian so I guess I couldn’t go with the whole bug eating thing. Perhaps a tortoise, the laid back lifestyle appeals to me and I’d be happy knowing that I was one of the more intelligent reptiles.

Venus

First of all, everyone welcome Christine to Unprovoked! Her site comes complete with a brand spanking new layout as well.

Even though I missed the recent transit of Venus, it’s comforting to know that I’ll have another chance in eight years. What makes it even better is that when I was reading Time the other day I discovered that it would occur on my 27th birthday. Being a science geek, that makes for a very big yay!

Ugh, my dad called me earlier, he’s leaving Hong Kong for good in a couple of weeks and so wants me to drop by sometime over the weekend to see him and the kids. I love seeing the kids, and I love seeing my stepmom, so guess who that leaves to dislike seeing. I usually bring someone with me to keep my spirits up, but unfortunately Willie’s got to work and there’s no one else in HK right now who I’m close enough to to ask along.

More bookies from Amazon arrived today, Web Design in a Nutshell and two (1,2) by Eric Meyer. Those should keep me busy for a while!

Nice Comment

Now here’s a comment from the last entry that got to me a bit…

“That’s really nice how yur taking care of a turtle lol I want one!”

Well I was actually talking about Wasabi passing away, thanks for actually reading the post and being so sensitive about it.

The first shipment of books my sister ordered for me from Amazon arrived yesterday, two on keeping turtles and one on bread. Can’t wait for the rest to come in, I chose quite a few on web design.

Things between Willie and I have been going wonderfully lately. After our jealousy chat a few nights ago we’ve been a lot closer than usual. We did some pretty amazing stuff in the bedroom the other night, it’s great to feel all the passion coming back. Going back to his place tomorrow night, yum.

Not all too much to write about, so here’s the Daily Dirt.

1. Has anyone in your family recently had a baby?
Not recently, I think the last kid to pop up in our family was about a year ago.

2. Do you want kids in the near future?
A huge and resounding no. In five to ten years time perhaps, but not now.

3. What is your favorite baby name for a girl?
Tanya.

4. What is your favorite baby name for a boy?
Jason.

5. What’s the one thing that makes you never want to have kids?
The fact that they grow up to become teenagers!

Unprovoked update: if you haven’t already noticed, the amusement section is gone (I merged it with the goodies and the Bakelog is up. I always want to write about what I’ve been up to in the kitchen but hate clogging this blog up, so…

New Theme

I’ve added a new theme, let me know what you guys think.

Thanks for all the sweet comments about Wasabi, I appreciate the sentiments. It still feels a bit weird, I hadn’t realised how much time I would devote each day to taking care of him (his pneumonia had left him with a bad lung and he became pretty dependant on people and wouldn’t want to eat unless either me or mom would hand feed him). We’re still thinking about whether or not we should adopt another turtle, we’d have to find one around the same size as Dorothy and in a few years when they’re full grown we’d really need a massive tank.

Willie and I had one of those relationship talks last night. We’re both slightly possessive by nature and that obviously brings up a few problems. I get irked when he’s out too late with friends and he gets jealous if I’m out with other guys. It was all discussed calmly though, we both hate arguments. In the end we promised we’ll try to ease up on each other a bit, and that we’re just too damn good together to let things like that bug us.

Got my first ever assignment in tertiary education back today, 100%. Muah, over the years I’ve learned that if I want a good grade I should double check my work, but only once! When I look over my work too many times I just start to doubt everything I’ve written and it drives me nuts.

Signed up for BlogMatch the other day. It’s a service run by Dodo to help people find personal blogs run by people with similar interests. I’d recommend checking it out, looks like good fun.

Unprovoked update: Apart from the new theme, I’ve also set WordPress to allow trackbacks and pingbacks as well as added the stats page.

[Edit] Thought I’d try some memes out, so here’s the Sunday Brunch.

1. How do you usually celebrate your birthday?
I’m not one for huge celebrations, so usually just a nice dinner with close friends.

2. Do you ever lie about your age?
Not anymore. I don’t have to say I’m 18 or older anymore, now that I actually am.

3. What is your favorite flavor(s) of cake and ice cream?
Well, I don’t actually eat cake or ice cream… But before when I did I’d have to say vanilla for both.

4. Have you ever completely forgotten the birthday of a family member or friend?
Yes, but no one who I was particularly close to.

5. What was the most memorable birthday party you’ve attended?
I guess my seventh (I think it was my seventh) birthday, since it was the only time I ever held a party. My sister and her boyfriend where in charge and I just remember being kinda embarrased because even at that age I thought all my friends were brats. Don’t really attend many huge parties, like I said before, I prefer smaller get togethers. [/Edit]
